Is a wholesale nursery situated on the northern slope of the Magaliesburg range at De Wildt, Pretoria. The Nursery was founded in July 1983. Originally known as Patryshoek Nursery, we specialised in rare cycads. In 1999 the Nursery changed its name to Flora R.S.A. Nursery and we now specialise in the production of indigenous trees, shrubs, flowers, ground covers, aloes and succulents. We also sell compost and topsoil. We are currently one of the largest suppliers of native plants in the country. We have dedicated staff that are friendly and focused on client service.
Is to be South Africa’s largest supplier of indigenous plants with the largest quantity and the best quality available. It is also our mission to be a supplier with the widest variety of indigenous plants. We strive to educate our clients in conjunction with our workforce, in the utilization of our indigenous plants.
Is to train our workforce in their respective positions so that they can become specialists and improve and uplift their own lifestyle. It is our vision to be a model nursery that incorporates the latest technology where applicable.
Flora R.S.A. Nursery has a workforce of one 30 people, all dedicated to help building a company that all can be proud of. Nominated staff goes on annual training for first aid and safety courses. There are specialists like the production team, frontloader drivers tractor drivers and heavy duty truck drivers. Specialists go for vocational training to prepare them for their specialized duties – pest control, front loader operators, truck drivers, etc… We are involved in a horticultural learnership program that gives an opportunity for a previously disadvantaged person to study horticulture at our nursery. Theory training will be done in arrangement with a leading accredited training facility. Employees have the opportunity to formal training.
Out target market is Nurseries, Landscapers, Landscape Contractors, Plant Brokers, Municipalities, Mining and Developers but we also have a retail section where the public can shop to their heart’s content, finding even the odd indigenous plant. We have supplied numerous major projects – Kolonnade, Monte Casino, Carnival City, Misty Hills, street trees for the City of Tshwane, Golf Estates like Silverlakes, Mooikloof, Eagle Canyon, Jackals Creek, the greening of Soweto Project of Joburg City Parks and more.
Our delivery fleet consists of an eight ton truck, one three ton truck and two utility vehicles. When ever we deliver large quantities of plants. We make use of a contractor with 30 ton trucks to deliver orders. We deliver country-wide and have delivered by air freight, railway freight and by road. We strive to deliver on time to meet our client’s deadline and budget.
We propagate on 20 hectare of land. We plan our production according to demand of the industry. We have a seedling section and two propagation tunnels of 600 m² of propagating surface, the tunnels can also hold 1’968 98 cavity trays. We have 1.5 hectare under shade cloth, the remaining area is where the rest of the plants stand ready for sale. Propagation of trees are mainly done by seed and also cuttings from our mother plants.
Our growing medium is mixed by ourselves and we also make our own compost. We currently have two front end loaders that are responsible for mixing compost and the growing mediums. The planting mix consists of topsoil, and compost. A slow release fertilizer is also added. Planting bags are filled by hand and then driven to the selected area and offloaded, ready for planting.
With eight boreholes, three cement dams and then a natural spring on the second property water is not a problem and we are also extending the range to include aloe’s and other succulents, which are proving to be a growing trend in the industry due to water shortages country-wide.
The nursery has grown so much so that the we had to acquire a second eight hectare property that is dedicated to grow trees in bigger bags like 20 litre, 50 litre and 100 litre.
