INDIGENOUS PLANTS

What are indigenous plants? It is defined as native to a given region or ecosystem as a result of natural processes. In South Africa we have many ecosystems, thus many varieties of indigenous trees and shrubs and ground covers. What advantage do these plants have in our gardens? Indigenous plants are very adaptable in gardens. They are water wise, they attract insects and birds. They even give us food, if you think of carissa macrocarpa which grows into a big shrub with red juicy fruit that is edible and full of vitamin-c and other minerals.
